Info —

Sara Al-Afifi is a Graphic Designer, researcher and illustrator based in Doha Qatar. She has been researching Arab societies’ collective psychology and their perception of oppression, as well as, examining graphic design through the lens of philosophy, orientalism and revisionist history.  

Her thesis project “I have things to say, but I’m afraid of the consequences” samples and remixes text and imagery from historical and contemporary media to produce a range of graphic formats.

She is currently the Arabic Typography teaching and research assistant in the Graphic Design Department at VCUarts Qatar.

240x320mm, 24 Pages / 4 color glow in the dark ink / Printed on Arches 75gsm cotton rag paper.
Edition of 100 / Screen printed by Mr. Vincent at Printec in Qatar.

The result of a collaboration between Me, Latifa Al KuwariReham Ahmed, Sarah Elawad and Nathan Ross Davis, the fantasy pop zine uses text from the original Arabian Nights stories and remixed imagery from the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum (FBQ) in Doha. This book is the first screen printed book to be produced in Qatar, and is printed with two glow in the dark inks, silver metallic and green.This publication was sponsored by an Undergraduate Research Grant at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar.
